Y4 WORLD BOOK DAY (SHARE A STORY) - SPRING 2 - 05/03/2020

Today, the children in Year 4 were invited to share their favourite stories. The children enjoyed discussing their favourite books and authors. The staff at Stanningley Primary School are committed to making story sharing a habit of a life time and create readers for life.

Y4 SAFER INTERNET DAY - SPRING 1 - 11/02/2020

As part of Safer Internet Day, we discussed how to stay safe when we use the internet. We designed a poster to show the way we would like the internet to be used #Free to be me.

Y4 SCIENCE - LOOKING AT STATES OF MATTER - SPRING 1

Class 4 observed what happened to the temperature of an ice cube as it changed from a solid to a liquid. We took a temperature reading, using a thermometer, every three minutes for thirty minutes.

Y4 GEOGRAPHY RIVERS PRESENTATION - SPRING 1

We researched how people have used and affected rivers around the world and, as part of a group, presented the information to the rest of the class.

Y4 YORKSHIRE WATER VISIT - SPRING 1 - 04/02/2020

Today, Y4 visited the Yorkshire Water Education Centre in Headingley. The visit to the treatment works supported our half term theme, Rivers and The Water Cycle. Whilst at the Education Centre the children were introduced to the water cycle and where our water comes from. They then listened carefully to the Baddies in the Works presentation and learnt how Yorkshire Water remove the 'baddies' from the water that they treat. One of the highlights of the morning was when the children had a guided tour of the site. However, they also enjoyed the group work and the six interactive sessions. Thank you to everyone at Yorkshire Water Education Centre for welcoming us.

Y4 GEOGRAPHY RAINFALL INVESTIGATION - SPRING 1

As part of our work on rivers and the water cycle, we went outside to investigate what happens when rain falls on the land. We simulated rainfall with a watering can and observed what happened when it fell on a variety of surfaces in our school grounds.

Y4 EXPLORING THE SCIENCE OF MUSICAL SOUNDS - SPRING 1 - 13/1/2020

Today, Y4 were visited by Professor Rivers who delivered the Exploring the Science of Musical Sounds Workshop. This workshop was specially tailored for Year 4 pupils who will be attending the Piano Fantasia in March. Delivered by a music specialist and trained primary school teacher, this session introduced and explored the engineering of the instrument. During the session Y4 completed activities and group work to, - Understand that sound is made when objects or materials vibrate - Explore how some instruments produce sound and how pitch changes - Understand how a piano produces sound by investigating its mechanics - Feel connected to the piano and be inspired by its versatility to shape different styles of music

Y4 SPECIAL CHRISTMAS VISITOR - AUTUMN 2 - 19/12/19

Class 4, were so excited when Santa made a quick visit to their Christmas Party. Every child, personally received an individual gift and the class thanked him by singing one of his favourite songs, WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS. We wish you all a very Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Y4 CHRISTMAS PARTY - AUTUMN 2 - 19/12/19

A very festive afternoon was shared by ALL in Class 4. Dancing, games, food and laughter. Thank you Class 4, you are amazing.

'I'm Gonna Shine!' - AUTUMN 2 - 17/12/19

We were all oozing with pride today when the children performed their Christmas Nativity Production, Im Gonna Shine! The quality of the singing and the acting was amazing and the audience were delighted with the performance. Thank you to all who attended. Happy Christmas Everyone.

CASH FOR KIDS CHARITY DRESS UP - AUTUMN 2 - 13/12/19

Today, Class 4 supported MISSION CHRISTMAS and Cash for Kids by donating a minimum of one pound, to dress up Christmassy. Cash for Kids responds to the needs of children in our communities so they can live life to the full and realise their individual potential. Based across 22 areas in the UK, at the heart of your favourite radio stations, Cash for Kids support children aged 0-18 who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. Together, we can make a difference.

Y4 STANNINGLEY STARS WATERSTONES VISIT - AUTUMN 2 - 13/12/19

To conclude our 6 week reading intervention programme, today we were proud to take we a small group of Y4 children to visit Waterstones Book Store, in Bradford. The store is often described as a gem of a bookshop, housed in Bradford's Victorian Gothic Wool Exchange building. The children had the opportunity to explore the store whilst putting into practice some of the reading skills that they have learnt over the past weeks. Before leaving the store, on the mezzanine floor, the children were given the opportunity to sit in the balcony cafe, with a book and admire the architecture of both the shop and the city.

Y4 DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - AUTUMN 2

The focus for our design technology learning this half term was Electrical Systems. We linked this to our learning in science and looked at simple circuits and switches including programming & control. As part of the DT process the children went through the 4 stages of Design, Make, Evaluate and Technical knowledge. The design brief was to make an illuminated sign to advertise the Christmas performance. Take a look at our finished products.

Y4 ENGLISH (Coming Home) - AUTUMN 2 - WB 22/11/19

This week, using the book Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo, the children completed a range of activities in order to deepen their understanding. The children enjoyed the, Thought Tunnel Dilemma and made two separate arguments for answering the question, Should Robin continue his Journey? The children also enjoyed preparing the poem to read aloud and perform. The children were all allocated a paragraph of the book to rehearse. The children practiced reading with expression which allowed them to absorb the words, tunes and patterns of the poem.

PREMIER LEAGUE READING STARS LIBRARY VISIT - AUTUMN 2 - 22/11/19

Working in partnership with Bradford City Football Club, today we were proud to take a small group of children to visit Bramley Library on Hough Lane. This was a super opportunity for the children to use resources in the community whilst improving their reading skills. The children were impeccably behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the session.

Y4 SPANISH - AUTUMN 2 - 19/11/19

In Spanish, the children are learning the months of the year. The children had to order the months correctly before pronouncing their month to others. After the practical work the children completed a calendar task in order to recognise and spell words.

Y4 HEALTH & HYGIENE PRIMARY SESSION - AUTUMN 2 - 18/11/19

Antibiotic resistance is accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, as well as poor infection prevention and control. In response to this the Support & Prevention Team (Health and Wellbeing Service, LCC) in partnership with Leeds University and Public Health (LCC) today offered Year 4 an interactive session on health and hygiene. Session Learning Outcomes, Explain key terms in relation to hygiene and infection Explain why hand washing is important in preventing the spread of infection/s. Provide a basic explanation of why, when and how medicines (including antibiotics) are used and the importance of using them correctly

Y4 SCIENCE (ELECTRICITY) - AUTUMN 2

The Y4 Switched On science unit this half term is Power it up! This unit explores Electricity. The children revisited some uses of electricity and the importance of safety before constructing simple circuits. They then learnt how to change a circuit by changing the components make up. The third part of this topic leads in to a final application of knowledge and skills where the children will link their work to a design technology project.

Y4 RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN IN NEED - AUTUMN 2 - 15/11/19

On Friday 15th November we raised money for BBC Children in Need in exchange for ditching our school uniform. We also had a special Children in Need Raffle with Y4 having a few of the winning tickets. After celebration assembly we were all very excited when we visited Pudsey Bear and posed for a photo. TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE YOUNG LIVES.

Y4 - WE WILL REMEMBER YOU - AUTUMN 2 - 11/11/19

Y4 have been learning about Armistice Day. In English we wrote repeating poems thinking carefully about the vocabulary that we used. We also made our own poppies thinking about the flower that is now a symbol to remember those who have given their lives in war. We also learnt that the reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended. Y4 respectfully completed a 2 minute silence.

Y4 PE (SHAPE UP) - AUTUMN 2 - 11/2019

Over the last few weeks the children started the sessions by walking in and out of each other. On the count of 8 they were all able to make and hold a shape. They then explored themed shapes that the adult called. This progressed to when you get to the count of 8 find a partner and hold a counter balance. Moving the lessons forward the children the found another pair to make a group of 4. They chose and performed a shape at the same time facing inwards. They then adjusted the shape so that it contrasted with others in the group. Together the children then developed performed and synchronized a sequence. The social cog for the lessons started with I can help, praise and encourage others. This progressed to I show patience and support to others.

Y4 COOKING IN THE CURRICULUM - AUTUMN 2

COOKING AND NUTRITION. As part of their work with food, pupils should be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Instilling a love of cooking in pupils will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life. Pupils should be taught to Key stage 1 to use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes to understand where food comes from Key stage 2 to understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques to understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. Throughout Autumn 2, groups of children spent the afternoon preparing and enjoying Pasta Bolognaise.

Y4 MARTIN LUTHER KING WORKSHOP - BLACK HISTORY - AUTUMN 1 - 7/10/19

As part of our 'Black History Month' learning, Colin, Julie and Adam came in to school to teach us some performance poetry. We learnt a poem about Martin Luther King and had worked hard to add appropriate actions. The poetry workshop was great fun but it also helped us to understand just how important equality is.

Y4 SCIENCE (WHAT'S THAT SOUND) - AUTUMN 1

Class 4 experimented to find patterns linking the pitch of a sound and the source of a sound. Shortening a string or tightening an elastic band made a higher note.

Y4 PSHE (EMERGENCY CALL) - AUTUMN 1 - 11/09/19

Y4 learnt how to make an emergency call and role played an emergency situation with a partner. The children had to explain the situation and clearly give their names and addresses to the call operator. The call operator prompted them to give extra information and explained what they needed to do for the patient.

Y4 ROAD SAFETY (PEDESTRIAN TRAINING) - AUTUMN 1 - 11/09/2019

Today, members of the Leeds City Council Road Safety Team came into Class 4 to carry out pedestrian crossing skills training. The training involved identifying safer places to cross and practical road crossing skills using a pedestrian crossing facility. The children were taken out to cross local roads in small groups and were impeccably behaved.

Y4 NSPCC PANTS - AUTUMN 1 - 11/09/2019

Along with many schools across the country at Stanningley Primary School we use the NSPCC Pantosaurus rule to help to teach children about keeping themselves safe. With the help of the friendly Pantosaurus dinosaur adults both at school and at home can teach children about how to stay safe from abuse. At a level appropriate for their own age, all children learn about how the parts of their bodies which are covered by our underwear are private parts and are not for other people to see or touch and how important it is to talk to someone about anything which upsets or worries you. Today, Class 4 were introduced to the NSPCC singing dinosaur video to introduce the very important PANTS acronym. The children loved singing along with Pantosaurus whilst learning the key PANTS messages. HELP YOUR CHILD TO STAY SAFE BY TALKING PANTS!

Y4 CLASSROOM RULES - AUTUMN 1 - 03/09/2019

Class 4 made a fantastic start to the new academic year. One of the first tasks of the new term was to work together in order to decide upon the classroom rules. At the end of the activity, the children used the 'Diamond 9' formation to prioritise their rules. We are looking forward to a very successful year in Class 4.
